Building Communities, Sustainable Livelihoods and Social Enterprise
Poverty reduction remains one of the key goals of international development. Today, it is recognised that reducing poverty has much to do with building the assets of vulnerable communities. Assets building is the basis for reducing vulnerability. Assets serve as a buffer to the shocks and stresses of daily life and are a way of ensuring more sustainable livelihoods.
This years ASF Summer School will explore the strategic role that architects must play in building sustainable livelihoods. Teams of participants will each act as a ’social enterprise’ and will innovate with waste materials from Eden’s waste recycling centre to produce building components (windows, doors, wall panels, roof panels, gutters, services etc). Each team will develop a business plan for how their enterprise can serve the social needs of their community. The hands on component development workshops will be paralleled with lectures and seminars on Development and Sustainable Livelihoods, waste recycling, building from waste, and social enterprise planning.
A team of international renowned professionals and academics will direct the programme.
